Hurst spit always takes me back to my childhood. I grew up just down the road so we used to go there fairly often. It’s a long trek across the shingle spit, especially now. There is a firm area to walk on along the top, but with social distancing I ended up on the softer section and it made a difference! The castle itself is a little disappointing as castles go, if you are expecting turrets and towers. But bearing in mind its purpose and location, it’s pretty impressive. The lighthouse is a plain white tower looking over the Solent, and I am always transported back to my youth when the Famous Five was adapted to television in the Seventies and they used my stomping grounds as filming locations, from the lighthouse to Lepe to the moors of the New Forest.
